My dear apprentice,
Welcome to the first Laboratory Reflection.
These Laboratory Reflections are different from the main chapters you have been following. The grand chapters tell the full story of my journey — the sweeping tale of my youth, my struggles in the laboratory, and the creation of the elixirs. Those chapters unfold every two weeks.
Here, in these Laboratory Reflections, I speak to you in a quieter, more personal way. Think of them as pages from my private journal — intimate reflections I write by the fire when the day’s work is done. They are not part of the main story. Instead, they offer simple, honest wisdom and small practices drawn from my own experiences.
In these entries, there are no dramatic experiments or glowing vials. Only quiet truths and lessons I have gathered along the path.
The Power of a Solemn Vow
Tonight, in this first Laboratory Reflection, I wish to speak with you about something that changed the entire direction of my life: the power of a solemn vow.
For many long years I carried a deep restlessness inside me. It was not the restlessness of laziness or boredom. It was the restlessness of a man who saw potential everywhere yet watched it go to waste.
I walked the bustling docks and crowded marketplaces of Corvanna day after day. The air was thick with the scent of spices, smoked fish, rare dyes, and ambition. I watched talented merchants and skilled artisans pour their hearts, their life savings, and their brightest ideas into new ventures. Many of them possessed genuine courage, sharp minds, and tireless work ethic. Yet time after time I witnessed those same ventures collapse. Some failed because of broken partnerships. Others collapsed under poor timing or crushing debts. Still others simply lost momentum and faded quietly into obscurity. Each failure I witnessed left a deeper mark on me than the last.
Meanwhile, I spent fifteen long years in relentless study. I journeyed along dangerous roads to forgotten libraries and crumbling monasteries. I copied ancient manuscripts by flickering candlelight until my eyes burned and my hands cramped with pain. I mastered the delicate arts of distillation, precise measurement, careful observation, and the complex language of transformation. On the surface, I appeared to be a dedicated student of alchemy. But deep inside, I knew the truth: all that knowledge remained trapped in theory. I understood the beautiful idea of transformation perfectly in my mind, yet I had not created a single thing that truly helped another living soul. The painful gap between what I knew and what I could actually do grew wider and more unbearable with every passing year.
Then came that cold autumn night in the crowded tavern near the docks.
The fire crackled low. The air was heavy with woodsmoke, roasted fish, and the weary voices of men who had worked hard all day. I sat at a rough wooden table and listened as a man I had known since childhood — once a vibrant, promising trader full of energy and vision — told me with a trembling voice how his thriving business had completely crumbled. As tears welled in his eyes, something profound and irreversible shifted inside me. In that exact moment, a hard truth finally broke through: knowledge without commitment is hollow. Understanding without decisive action is ultimately worthless.
So I made a solemn vow.
I spoke it with my entire being — quietly, but with unbreakable conviction. I declared that I would no longer wait for perfect conditions. I would forge my own path starting that very night. I would dedicate myself completely to practical experimentation. I would create living tools — real elixirs — that could help ordinary people transform raw ambition into consistent, lasting success.
That single vow became the invisible force that carried me forward through the darkest years in the laboratory. When batches exploded and scarred my hands, the vow reminded me why I continued. When doubt whispered that I was wasting my life on a foolish dream, the vow answered back with even greater strength. It became my anchor when the storms grew fierce and my compass when the path disappeared into darkness.
A solemn vow is not a casual goal written casually on paper. It is a sacred contract you make with your future self. It draws a clear, unbreakable line between who you have been and who you are now committed to becoming.
My dear apprentice, a vow held only in the mind eventually loses its power. It becomes truly alive when we give it form and daily attention. That is why I want to share with you two simple practices that I still use to this day.
Exercise One – Crafting Your Solemn Vow
Tonight or tomorrow morning, find a quiet place. Choose one important project, venture, or ambition you have been circling for months or even years.
Write your vow in the present tense. Make it specific. Include three parts:
The clear outcome you commit to achieve
The exact deadline by which you will achieve it
The price you are willing to pay — what you will sacrifice or endure
Then read your vow aloud every single morning for the next thirty days. Speak it with conviction, even when doubt is present. Let the words sink into your bones.
Exercise Two – The Daily Renewal
Each evening, before you sleep, ask yourself one simple question:
“Did my actions today honor the vow I made?”
Write one sentence in answer. This small daily practice compounds into remarkable discipline over time.
My dear apprentice, the difference between those who dream and those who create is rarely talent or resources. More often, it is the courage to make a solemn vow and then walk forward with it, day after day, through both fire and doubt.
Thank you for spending this quiet time with me in the laboratory.

This series starts in exactly the right place by addressing what is often an entrepreneur’s biggest obstacle: getting started. Should I begin now, or should I wait? The podcast effectively parts the Red Sea of noise made up of self-doubt, uncertainty, and concerns about whether the conditions are right, and creates a clear path forward for entrepreneurs to begin their journey.
