I told you about the tedium of those two years under Griswald, the scrubbing, the identifying, the copying. I told you about the eleven attempts, and the fluency that finally arrived without any bell rung to announce it. What I did not tell you, not directly, was how it felt to live inside that stretch of time while it was still happening, before I knew it would end in anything at all.</p><p>There is a particular kind of exhaustion that has nothing to do with the difficulty of the work itself. I remember mornings I approached Griswald&#8217;s vessels with something close to dread, not because the cleaning was hard, my hands could have done it half asleep by then, but because the accumulated weight of doing it again, and again, with no visible proof that any of it was leading anywhere, had begun to feel less like practice and more like punishment. I want you to understand that this feeling was not a sign I was doing something wrong. It was simply the true cost of the long middle, the stretch of any real discipline that comes after the excitement of beginning and long before the satisfaction of arrival.</p><p>I think we speak often, you and I, of foundations and failures and lessons hard-won. I think we speak less often of the particular, quiet toll it takes to keep showing up for work that offers you nothing to show anyone else. No customer sees a well-organized laboratory. No rival is impressed by a boy who has correctly identified a root for the four hundredth time. The middle of any real discipline is invisible not only in its results, as I told you before, but in its daily experience. You are, most days, laboring for an audience of one, and that one is often too tired or too doubtful to offer much encouragement.</p><p>I did not have a name for this at fourteen, or at fifteen, or through most of my second year. I only knew that some mornings were heavier than others, and that the heaviness had nothing to do with what I was actually being asked to do. Griswald never spoke to this directly either, not in any tender way, that was not his manner. But I remember, once, catching him watching me scrub a vessel with more force than the task required, my frustration plainly written across my shoulders, and he said only this: that the middle asks more of a person than the beginning or the end ever will, because the beginning has hope to carry it, and the end has relief, and the middle has only the person themselves.</p><p>I have thought of that line often since, in ventures that had nothing to do with alchemy. I think of it now, watching younger founders in the long middle of their own disciplines, the unglamorous stretch after the initial excitement has worn thin and before any real proof of progress has arrived. I want to tell you plainly, my dear apprentice, that if you are there now, in some long middle of your own, the heaviness you feel is not a verdict on your capability. It is simply the weather of that particular season, and it passes, though it rarely announces when.</p><p>What I have learned to do, across the years, is smaller than I once wished it could be. I did not discover some grand secret to making the middle feel light. I only learned to notice, honestly, when the heaviness was speaking truthfully about something needing to change, and when it was simply the ordinary weight of sustained effort, nothing more sinister than that. The two can feel identical from the inside. Learning to tell them apart, slowly, imperfectly, is itself a kind of foundation, though a quieter one than the kind Griswald taught me to build with my hands.</p><p>Before you go tonight, I will not ask you a question about your venture, or your strategy, or your next step. I will only ask you this. In the long middle you are currently living through, whatever it happens to be, when did you last simply acknowledge, without judgment, that it is heavy right now? Not to fix it. Only to see it clearly, the way I finally learned to see my own tedium clearly, not as failure, but as the ordinary, unglamorous weather of doing something worth finishing.</p><p>Until the next telling, keep tending the fire, even on the evenings it gives no warmth back.</p><div class="captioned-button-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://aureachronicles.com/p/on-the-long-middle?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Share&quot;}" data-component-name="CaptionedButtonToDOM"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Eldric &amp; The Entrepreneurial Elixirs! Not the ache of failure, which we will return to often enough in these chronicles. Not the ache of loss, or of a formula gone wrong. I want to speak of something quieter and, in its own way, harder to bear. The ache of having seen something real, and not yet being ready to act on it.</p><p>You will remember, if you have walked with me this far, the boy on the crate near the fish market, watching Bellamy fall and Osric rise, learning slowly to see the gap between what a trade endures and what it might solve. That seeing came to me early, and it came to me for free, in the sense that watching costs nothing but attention. What came after it did not come for free at all.</p><p>I want to tell you honestly that the two years I spent under Griswald&#8217;s instruction were not only tedious. Tedium I could have endured more easily if it were the whole of it. What made those years genuinely difficult was that I already knew things. I had already learned to see the gap Osric closed. I understood, in some wordless way, that a whole city of ventures around me were quietly enduring problems no one had bothered to solve. And I could do nothing about any of it. Not yet. I was scrubbing vessels while the knowledge sat in me, unused, aging like a formula left too long on the shelf.</p><p>I do not think I have ever fully described to you how that particular waiting felt. It was not patience, not really, not in the beginning. It was closer to a held breath. I would walk home from Griswald&#8217;s laboratory some evenings past the very stalls and workshops I had once watched as a boy, and I would see, with painful clarity, three or four more gaps just like the ones I had already catalogued. A dyer whose method wasted a fifth of his materials to spoilage. A rope-maker whose apprentices kept injuring their hands in a manner no one had thought to redesign around. I saw them all. And I had, at that point, no craft steady enough in my own hands to do anything but see them and keep walking.</p><p>I want you to know that this is not a failure of character, if you find yourself there now. It is, I have come to believe, one of the loneliest and least discussed stages of any real undertaking. The stage after the seeing and before the doing, when you are neither the restless boy who has not yet noticed anything, nor the master who can act on what he notices with confidence. You are simply waiting, with the gap fully visible, and the tools to close it still incomplete in your hands.</p><p>Griswald never once told me to stop noticing, in those years. He only ever insisted that I not act prematurely on what I noticed, that I let the noticing accumulate as a kind of private wealth, saved rather than spent, until I had the craft to spend it wisely. I did not always believe him. There were evenings I resented every gap I saw and could not close, as though my own clear sight had become a kind of punishment.</p><p>I understand it differently now. The seeing that aches, unused, is not wasted. It does not evaporate simply because you cannot act on it today. Mine did not. Every gap I catalogued in those two years of waiting, I remembered, later, when my hands had finally caught up to my eyes. Nothing I saw on those evening walks was lost. It was only waiting, the way I was waiting, for the moment the two might finally meet.</p><p>Before you close this page tonight, I ask you to sit with a single question, one I did not know how to answer honestly during my own waiting years, and perhaps still do not fully answer even now. What have you already seen clearly, in your own venture or your own life, that you are not yet ready to act on? Not because you lack courage. Only because the craft to close that particular gap is still, honestly, incomplete in your hands.</p><p>You need not rush toward it. I did not. I only needed to keep it, the way I kept my private notebook by candlelight, trusting that the seeing itself was not wasted, only waiting for its hour.</p><p>Until the next telling, keep watching, even when your hands are not yet ready to answer what your eyes have found.</p><div class="captioned-button-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://aureachronicles.com/p/on-waiting-well?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Share&quot;}" data-component-name="CaptionedButtonToDOM"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Eldric &amp; The Entrepreneurial Elixirs! main chapters you have been following. The grand chapters tell the full story of my journey &#8212; the sweeping tale of my youth, my struggles in the laboratory, and the creation of the elixirs. Those chapters unfold every two weeks.</p><p>Here, in these Laboratory Reflections, I speak to you in a quieter, more personal way. Think of them as pages from my private journal &#8212; intimate reflections I write by the fire when the day&#8217;s work is done. They are not part of the main story. Instead, they offer simple, honest wisdom and small practices drawn from my own experiences.</p><p>In these entries, there are no dramatic experiments or glowing vials. Only quiet truths and lessons I have gathered along the path.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png" width="1456" height="110" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:110,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:32149,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://aureachronicles.com/i/202534374?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!BE8W!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2f75d914-0f96-4554-adde-a53166ae5535_1600x121.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><h3><span data-color="#d4af37" style="color: rgb(212, 175, 55);">The Power of a Solemn Vow</span></h3><p>Tonight, in this first Laboratory Reflection, I wish to speak with you about something that changed the entire direction of my life: <strong>the power of a solemn vow.</strong></p><p>For many long years I carried a deep restlessness inside me. It was not the restlessness of laziness or boredom. It was the restlessness of a man who saw potential everywhere yet watched it go to waste.</p><p>I walked the bustling docks and crowded marketplaces of Corvanna day after day. The air was thick with the scent of spices, smoked fish, rare dyes, and ambition. I watched talented merchants and skilled artisans pour their hearts, their life savings, and their brightest ideas into new ventures. Many of them possessed genuine courage, sharp minds, and tireless work ethic. Yet time after time I witnessed those same ventures collapse. Some failed because of broken partnerships. Others collapsed under poor timing or crushing debts. Still others simply lost momentum and faded quietly into obscurity. Each failure I witnessed left a deeper mark on me than the last.</p><p>Meanwhile, I spent fifteen long years in relentless study. I journeyed along dangerous roads to forgotten libraries and crumbling monasteries. I copied ancient manuscripts by flickering candlelight until my eyes burned and my hands cramped with pain. I mastered the delicate arts of distillation, precise measurement, careful observation, and the complex language of transformation. On the surface, I appeared to be a dedicated student of alchemy. But deep inside, I knew the truth: all that knowledge remained trapped in theory. I understood the beautiful idea of transformation perfectly in my mind, yet I had not created a single thing that truly helped another living soul. The painful gap between what I knew and what I could actually do grew wider and more unbearable with every passing year.</p><p>Then came that cold autumn night in the crowded tavern near the docks.</p><p>The fire crackled low. The air was heavy with woodsmoke, roasted fish, and the weary voices of men who had worked hard all day. I sat at a rough wooden table and listened as a man I had known since childhood &#8212; once a vibrant, promising trader full of energy and vision &#8212; told me with a trembling voice how his thriving business had completely crumbled. As tears welled in his eyes, something profound and irreversible shifted inside me. In that exact moment, a hard truth finally broke through: knowledge without commitment is hollow. Understanding without decisive action is ultimately worthless.</p><p>So I made a solemn vow.</p><p>I spoke it with my entire being &#8212; quietly, but with unbreakable conviction. I declared that I would no longer wait for perfect conditions. I would forge my own path starting that very night. I would dedicate myself completely to practical experimentation. I would create living tools &#8212; real elixirs &#8212; that could help ordinary people transform raw ambition into consistent, lasting success.</p><p>That single vow became the invisible force that carried me forward through the darkest years in the laboratory. When batches exploded and scarred my hands, the vow reminded me why I continued. When doubt whispered that I was wasting my life on a foolish dream, the vow answered back with even greater strength. It became my anchor when the storms grew fierce and my compass when the path disappeared into darkness.</p><p>A solemn vow is not a casual goal written casually on paper. It is a sacred contract you make with your future self. It draws a clear, unbreakable line between who you have been and who you are now committed to becoming.</p><div><hr></div><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png" width="528" height="297" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/cde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:819,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:528,&quot;bytes&quot;:2310958,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://aureachronicles.com/i/202534374?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!D1_2!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcde36b93-61a6-4d5a-a4bf-23137c083020_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>My dear apprentice, a vow held only in the mind eventually loses its power.
